I'm living a life of optimized health, without sugar cravings, inflammation and hot flashes, and creating a life on my terms. I am beyond thrilled at my age. It wasn't always like this.
After leaving a stressful medical career in travel cardiovascular ultrasound, I felt lost and spent years trying to redefine myself and my purpose. What I didn't know was that during that time I was going through peri-menopause and that had a lot to do with my lack of focus, painful joints and high blood pressure, to name a few. I saw the OB/GYN once, and she never offered any advice, testing or education.
I had no clue that low estrogen could lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease, that high cortisol which can increase during perimenopause and menopause is linked to insulin resistance which could lead to diabetes - all this, plus a lot more.
Furthermore, I also had a sugar habit from childhood; I couldn't live without my daily chocolate bar, and I thought protein bars were healthy! Not only that, but I was bloated all the time, couldn't lose weight, and still had acne as an adult. Then when peri-menopause kicked in I was out of control. I ate healthy otherwise, but I knew something had to be done about the sugar addiction.
After becoming aware that stress in my life and transitioning to menopause was adding to my sugar habit, I became a student in Simple Habit change and evidence-based health strategies, which also changed my negative beliefs about who I was as a woman in peri-menopause and what I had to do to elevate my health and life.
I set an intention and came up with a plan NOT to set goals, but create small daily, SELF-NURTURING lifestyle changes that became new habits.
